I have mixed feelings about this place. Not having a long-term illness, I've only been here sporadically. I came here for pains in my legs and was given physiotherapy exercises to do at home before being discharged. Once, I was given an appointment, only to be told the appointment had been cancelled when I arrived for it. Early this year, my dad was a long-term inpatient here and some of the nurses and surgeons were great. Others attempted to bully and belittle him. One nurse refused to get him a bedpan when he was too weak to walk. But there also were a number of nurses with whom my dad built great rapport, so not all bad. If you are ever a patient here, tread very carefully.
Going to any open, public hospital is a lottery each time as your experience can vary wildly depending on a load of factors. The high throughput of patients puts both patients and staff under considerable pressure and stress, especially when everyone wants instant answers to all questions. I was in St George's for two weeks for major surgery last October. I have to say that from initial diagnosis to final discharge over a period of three months, the overall care from consultant to health care assistant on the ward was very good and I felt well looked after. Sure, there is room for further improvement (so not 5 stars) but to complain for having to wait a few hours for the result of a scan is being small-minded.
